Product Description

What Is a Two Piece Vial Box?

A two piece vial box consists of a separate base (tray) and lid that fit together with controlled telescoping resistance tight enough to stay closed in transit, smooth enough to open without force. Unlike tuck-end or auto-bottom cartons, there are no flaps to tuck or tabs to engage. The lid simply lifts. That structural simplicity is what makes the format feel expensive: no visible closures, no crease lines on the front panel, no folded paper edges at the opening.

The base cradles the vial with or without a foam or pulp insert while the lid wraps all four sides and the top. Both pieces are independently printable, which doubles the branded surface area compared to a standard tuck-end carton of the same footprint.

Industry Applications

Prestige Cosmetics & Serum Vials

Two-piece boxes are the default format for serums, facial oils, and eye-treatment dropper vials sold above the mass-market price tier. Soft-touch matte lamination on the lid exterior with a foil-stamped logo on the front panel is the category standard approachable enough for specialty retail, premium enough for department store adjacency.

Luxury Essential Oil & Fragrance Vials

Artisan and luxury essential oil brands use two-piece formats for single-SKU gift presentations and collector sets. Natural kraft base with a white SBS lid or a fully matched pair in the same stock gives brands the flexibility to use material contrast as a design element without additional print cost.

Gift Sets & Subscription Launch Kits

A multi-vial gift set in a two-piece box with a partitioned base insert reads as a considered, curated product rather than an assembled collection. The lid lift at the consumer end delivers the unboxing moment that drives social sharing particularly valuable for launch kits and seasonal gift editions.

Material Options

Board Type GSM Range Best For Eco Option
Natural Kraft 300–450 gsm Wellness, botanical, indie brands FSC® available; recyclable

Rigid Chipboard 600–1000 gsm Luxury vials, prestige gift sets Recyclable; FSC® on request
Recycled Kraft 250–350 gsm Eco-forward brands, sustainable lines PCR content; widely recyclable

Rigid chipboard is the standard for true two-piece construction the board weight provides the structural resistance that makes the lid-lift feel controlled rather than loose. Lighter stocks (natural kraft, white SBS) work well for sleeve-style two-piece formats where the base slides into the lid rather than telescoping.

Frequently Asked Questions

600–900 gsm rigid chipboard is the standard for a controlled telescoping fit the board’s caliper provides the resistance that keeps the lid seated without requiring force to open. For a looser sleeve-style two-piece (lid wraps base without telescoping), 350–450 gsm white SBS or kraft is sufficient. Send us your vial dimensions and we will specify the exact caliper and lid-to-base depth ratio for a clean fit.
Yes and it is often a deliberate design choice. A natural kraft base with a white SBS lid, or a matte-laminated lid with an uncoated base interior, creates material contrast that enhances the unboxing sequence. The only constraint is that both pieces must use board weights compatible with the telescoping geometry. We confirm fit at the dieline stage.
The foam or pulp insert is specified and priced separately from the two-piece box. We engineer both together base interior dimensions are built around the insert spec so there is no gap between insert and base wall. If you already have a vial insert from another supplier, share the dimensions and we will match the base to it. If you need us to spec and supply the insert, share your vial and we handle both.
100 units per SKU. Standard lead time is 10–12 business days after proof approval. Rush production in 6–8 business days is available confirm availability when you submit your brief. A physical pre-production sample ships in 3–4 days after file approval and is available on request.
We supply separate dieline templates for the lid and the base. Design both on the supplied templates in AI or PDF format with text outlined and raster elements at 300 dpi minimum. Keep critical copy 0.0625 in inside the safe line on both pieces; allow 0.125 in bleed on all trim edges. If your artwork involves the lid interior or base interior panels which we recommend for premium formats flag this at brief stage so we include those panels in the dieline.
